Within the restored Newal Kishore Press, Lucknow’s tradition of exchange finds a modern home. The conversation moves from books to boutiques, from woven cloth to a shared table, from familiar courtyards to new ideas.
Here, nostalgia lives alongside discovery. Le Press is a contemporary expression of the city’s generous, curious spirit — a meeting place for cultures, crafts and people.
Our name celebrates Lucknow’s Excellency Press and the legacy of the Newal Kishore Printing Press, established in 1858. “Press” remembers the printing house and the ideas it set in motion. The French inflection expresses the cosmopolitan spirit behind today’s Le Press: a place where Lucknow’s own traditions welcome influences from elsewhere.
The spirit is one of renaissance — rebirth. A historic centre of literary and cultural exchange becomes a modern melting pot, carrying Lucknow’s generous spirit into a new chapter.

LUCKNOW’S COSMOPOLITAN SETTING
Claude Martin’s Constantia, whose construction began in 1796, is part of the city’s encounter with European architectural ideas. That wider cultural exchange helps frame the French inflection and sense of nostalgia at Le Press today.
The Press campus has its own later history: its restoration narrative describes Lakhori brick, vaulted roofs, wooden trusses and wrought iron — local craft in conversation with European construction.

The forthcoming museum project will bring the Press’s publishing legacy into focus: the circulation of ideas, the meeting of languages and the people who helped make knowledge travel.
The ambition is to reconnect a new generation with the world of print and the cultural renewal that began here in 1858.

Lucknow’s literary and performing traditions continue to converse with Hindi cinema. At Le Press, those connections become encounters with artists, filmmakers and audiences.
The filmmaker curated Anjuman-e-Dil at Le Press, bringing Shahid and Sami Niazi’s qawwali to the Peepul Tree Courtyard in November 2025.
